County approves dental plan for residents

Putnam County was recently selected to help pilot a low-cost dental discount program.

Despite drinking fluoridated water, "I can't tell you how often I see people come into the (Upper Cumberland Career) Center, looking for jobs who have no teeth or who have a problem with dental hygiene. Those people are not employable," said District 5 County Commissioner Johnnie Wheeler. Wheeler also serves on the NACo board of directors. "It's hard for them to get a job. One of the reasons is because their self esteem is so low. They won't smile because of their teeth and they can't afford to go out and buy dental coverage on their own. And a lot of our older citizens do not have dental coverage."

Free dental clinic scheduled in Barboursville

The Piedmont Regional Mission of Mercy will host a free dental clinic for the working poor, underinsured and unin-sured next month.
