Cosmetic Dental Care

By Blake Kritzberg

Cosmetic dental care is becoming more and more popular in today’s society. In the past, if you wanted a cosmetic procedure done, that was just your tough luck -- you were on your own to pay for it. Any procedures deemed "cosmetic" simply weren't covered, end of story. But happily, times are changing.

Some of today's most popular cosmetic dental procedures include:

  • Braces
  • Teeth Whitening
  • Bleaching
  • Porcelain Veneers
  • Laser Gum Surgery

These are just a few of the treatments considered "cosmetic" in the eyes of most dental insurance companies. These types of treatments have exploded in popularity over the years. Fortunately, the widespread desire of many patients for these smile-improving treatments have actually influenced a number of dental insurance companies to change their policies, and add some coverage for them. Often, you still won't receive complete coverage for these treatments, but often you'll enjoy a large discount on them -- for example, you can sometimes get expensive porcelain veneers at 50% of the real cost, because your insurance company will pay for the rest.

For families with children, the easing up on "no coverage for cosmetic procedures" rule has amounted to a real blessing. Braces have always been mined-numbingly expensive, and yet many parents consider them necessary. They're still expensive, but the burden is really eased when your insurance company contributes to the cost.

Tooth whitening is another big concern for many people today. There are many different ways to whiten your teeth, but the most people still consider treatments at the dentist to be most effective. But tooth whitening at the dentist can also be very expensive, depending on how much whitening you need and what procedure you choose. With the popularity of whitening procedures growing daily, coverage by insurance companies is likely to keep expanding.

It's great news for we appearance-conscious Americans that more and more dental plans are covering an increasing number of cosmetic procedures. And things will probably improve even more, because insurance buyers are now looking for cosmetic coverage when they choose a plan, and finally finding that this kind of coverage is available to them. Even insurance companies have to bend to the desires and trends of the times -- and that's a good thing for everyone.
