Another slam for soda in schools

Soda (or “pop” by us Ohioans) is one of the leading causes of oral health problems in children and teenagers.

And certainly vending machines in school don’t help in this manner, considering most older kids have their own money.

That’s why many schools have been creating policies to fight this, but many simply don’t do enough.

I thought the idea was the educate kids how to make smart decisions, not make the decisions for them by limiting their options?

Before applying any OTC (over-the-counter) tooth whitening agent, check with a dentist to confirm that the stained portions of your teeth aren’t dangerous diseases or infections.

It will certainly help to treat the cause of the problem and not just the symptoms.

Schools helping kids find oral care

More and more schools are assisting in obtaining care for the aching teeth of students.

Some have even gone to great lengths to bring dentists into the school for the children, as many families simply don’t or can’t afford dental coverage.

It’s great to see our youngsters getting help, because after all, it is certainly not their fault or their decision.

Now if we could just get some responsible parents we’d be all set!

CDC reports oral health care improved

Based on studies conducted 10 years apart, the most recent completed in 2002, the CDC reports that oral health has improved in the United States.

Cavities are becoming less common, more dental sealants have been used, and people are losing fewer teeth.

Also the numbers of seniors (from 30% to roughly 20%) with false teeth has decreased as well.

Give yourselves a pat on the back for good oral hygiene!

Is fluoride getting a bad rep?

The ADA addresses concerns that fluoride in water can cause bone cancer in some individuals.

They claim the concerns are grossly overblown and the fluoride certainly causes more benefits than harm to society.

Research was performed to show limited increases in rare forms of bone cancer amongst younger males in the Harvard Dental school

Diabetics - Take care of your teeth
